Indian Cricket - The Selectors Suck

It’s official now. The BCCI Selectors of the Indian Cricket Team have all lost it. The panel which was dubbed “a bunch of jokers” in the yesteryears, have truly lived up to their name and reputation by axing Sourav Ganguly from the forthcoming one-day triangular series in Australia featuring Australia, India and Sri Lanka. To top it all they have still kept out Rahul Dravid who appeared to be all set, back in form and ready to take on the challenge in the lively pitches of Australia.

Not only is this decision to keep out the duo shocking, it is absolutely demoralizing for the millions of fans, who look up to these players for inspiration and motivation. Between the two of them they have the rich experience of over 600 ODIs. And both of them are in fine form now. In fact, just have a look at Sourav’s performance since his comeback. He has played 32 matches and scored 1240 runs at an average of 44+. Mr. Chairman of Selectors, who was the Man of the Series in the last completed series? Mr. Chairman of Selectors, who scored the second highest runs in the last calendar year in the world?

The disgusting Secretary of BCCI thinks Sourav isn’t fit for the team because of his running between the wickets and fielding. Mr. Secretary, if Sourav’s running between the wickets and fielding is poor, please show the fans and lovers of Cricket in India, another one poor runner and fielder who has amassed 11,221 runs in 308 matches at an average of over 40. Sourav has improved his running between the wickets and fielding with every passing year and is currently on a high in terms of form and motivation and this is the worst decision that could have been taken, and that is exactly what the Chairman of the “bunch of jokers” ordered.

And someone from the selection panel please explain to me why VVS Laxman doesn’t deserve to be in the ODI team? Laxman is probably one of the most successful batsmen against Australia. He could have easily replaced totally out of form and injured Yuvraj Singh. And why is Murali Kartik out? He is one of the most respected spinners in the Indian colours.

Horrible decision. This is not cricket.

Somehow, the double standards keep continuing. On one hand it is Ganguly’s alleged poor running and fielding and on the other hand, the BCCI wants a young team. Right, you have a young team. But a cardinal rule and probably the most logical rule in cricket selection is that you keep faith in your most experienced guys who are fit enough to see you through difficult tours against tough opposition. All experimentation is reserved for the minnows, where surprisingly the BCCI doesn’t ever seem to experiment.

Injustice has been meted out to the two greatest cricketers of India, and people all over the country would protest, I am sure. I would also like to let the advertisers know that this may harm your interests as interest in cricket may reach such an abyss that your earning will start taking big dives. Take note, one and all, and attempt to redress the situation at the earliest.

Twenty20 and Indian Captain

I have been planning to write a lot on the latest version of cricket matches - the Twenty20 format for quite some time. But before I could start on it, the World Cup took the whole cricketing world in its grip.

I think it is a wonderful format. Twenty overs per innings, and by three or three and a half hours, the game is won or lost. Let us not assume for even a moment that the players workload has gone down. If one watches the telecast, it can be seen that the bowlers are actually running back to their marks. No time is allowed to be wasted. In fact, if any team cannot complete their bowling of twenty overs then they are harshly penalised. All for the good of the game.
I especially enjoyed and liked the concept of "BOWL OUT". The league match between India and Pakistan was tied, and to break the tie, "BOWL OUT" had to played out. Just like penalty kick shootout in football, here five bowlers are selected by their respective captains and they bowl a ball each, by turn, alternating between the two teams and the team which knocks off the stumps more number of times wins. Just like India defeated Pakistan 3 - 0.
Dhoni, the Indian captain in this version of the game, however, doesn't prefer to win this way. That brings me to the next point of discussion. Rahul Dravid's resignation. Frankly, he should have resigned after the World Cup debacle and retired right now. His performance as a batsman and as a captain hasn't been good enough to merit any continuation. In fact, everyone agrees that Sourav Ganguly has been one of India's greatest captains ever, so if you have him in your team, use his cricketing brain. Very much like having Edison in a summer camp and not inventing a thing or two.
In any case, Ganguly's captaincy was never questioned. So why wasn't he reinstalled to his rightful position within the team. However, the shameful and shoddy way in which he was treated by BCCI, More and Chappel, he would naturally stay away from any important position.
So who should be the captain???
The certainties within the teams are few - Dhoni and Yuvraj, Sourav and Sachin, Dravid and Zaheer.
My suggestion would be - Dhoni as captain and Piyush Chawla as vice captain in all formats of the game. Please let us not make the same mistake by selecting a senior player as the captain, we are a futuristic team and let us not err in selecting both captain and vice captain of the same age group. One may end up never becoming nor standing a chance to lead the team. Of course they'd be groomed by the greatest maestro - Sourav in the fine art of captaining the side, forming a cohesive unit with a common objective.
My best wishes with the Indian Cricket team in South Africa.

NEW TWIST TO THE FORD STORY

Just a couple of days back Kent's Graham Ford was selected as the Coach of the Indian Cricket Team and was offered a contract for a year.

All was fine. Until now. News has just come in that he has declined the offer! Thank you Mr. Ford. Spare Indian Cricket your ignominy.

Ford said in a website -

I am very grateful to the club for allowing me to go to India to find out more about the job of coaching the Indian team.

I have had a chance to reflect on the offer made by the BCCI and their urgency to fill the vacant position and after careful consideration, I have decided to continue my work here at Kent. This has been a really difficult decision.

I am honoured that India have shown such interest in my capabilities, but feel that this is the right decision for me and my family.

India's Cricket Team Gets Graham Ford as the New Coach

Red Carpet Welcome for Former South African
Coach, sacked for his alleged connections with Bookies in India, to
India

The Indian Cricket Team gets Graham Ford as the new Coach. The BCCI arrived at the decision after a two hour long discussion where Former English Cricketer John Emburey's candidature was also considered.

Introducing the new coach with the following excerpt from rediff.com

Born in Pietermaritzberg, Natal, on November 16, 1960, Ford, like a number of South African players, excelled in various sports during his younger days. He was a good tennis player, too; so good that he once won the provincial tennis championship for Natal.

Why, is wife Liz is also a former Natal champion in the love-all game. Ford represented Natal in soccer, too. What's more, he is a qualified rugby union referee as well.

Despite his flair for different sports, he wasn't more than an average cricketer. As a right-hand batsman and off-spinner, he represented the Natal B team and figured in only seven first-class matches between 1982-83 and 1989-90.

In those seven matches and 13 innings, he scored just 162 runs at 13.50 without ever scoring a fifty. His highest score was 43. He held three catches and never got to try his bowling arm.

So much for the Coach. Worse, he was chucked out of his job as SA Coach after Hansiegate came to the fore. He allegedly had some connection with the bookies in India and avroad, and look here, we have invited him back to his den. Sure he loves to keep a low profile, and make all the money that the job offers, but is he good enough to deliver?

And what happened to Dave Whatmore? Was some secret meeting/ or phone call between BCCI and PCB played out?

India Face Exit in the ICC World Cup 2007

What a disgrace? Shameful.

India is virtually out of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 after their second loss in the preliminary round robin league phase. The first loss cam against the relative minnows Bangladesh, and yesterday the Indian team took the thrashing meted out by the Sri Lankans. India lost by 69 runs, getting nowhere close to the target and not giving any fight at all. Lame losers.

And now the team that was the runner up last time around, will not even feature in the top 8. What curse has befallen this erstwhile cricketing glory?????

Curse or not, Greg Chappel has to answer a few questions and whatever the answers he needs to be sacked immediately. Immediately. Many of the fans were vocal against his experiments throughout the last 2 years, but a far greater number was willing to take a chance, with a hope to win the World Cup. Greg kept on saying that he was focusing long term, and had the World Cup in sight. And what has he given in the World Cup? A first round exit to the last time runner up???????

Chappel got into controversy with Sourav Ganguly, universally acclaimed to be the best all time captain of India, and also the most aggressive, in Zimbabwe, and pulled many ropes to axe the glorius Sourav out of the team. To win the World Cup?

Irfan Pathan became a prolific batsman under Guru Greg’s motivation and hawk eyes, to win the World Cup! How many matches was he fit to play in the World Cup? He cannot even feature in the first XI. And he was such a good swing bowler. Greg wasted him.

Under Greg’s patronage, Dravid tried to play the role of the schemer. All his schemes well anticipated by almost all the oppositions and falling flat in most occasions. His on field captaincy was horrible and he never seemed to inspire any one to do anything much, forget about anything extra. Absolutely no aggression, no feeling for the team, just robotically changing the bowlers. And what was he doing batting so low down the order? His 60 in the match against Sri Lanka would have been more meaningful at no.3. So what was he doing so low down? Making room for buddy Virendra Sehwag. Viru, of all people has been off form throughout the last one year but has only been dropped for a couple of matches. He should be dropped forever, if Sourav could have been dropped for almost 10 months.

I am afraid, changes are required. Bold ones at that. But will Vengsarkar be the strong man he is rumored to be?

Greg must be sent packing to Australia straight from the Carribean Islands. For security reasons, at least. Dravid, as a captain, should be sacked immediately. Sehwag dropped for at least a couple of series, during which he could try county or domestic cricket and regin his form and fitness and in the interlude lose at least 10 kgs. Sachin must retire. If he doesn’t, he should be dropped. The reins of the team should be passed on back to Sourav and Yuvraj should be his deputy, and should be groomed to handle the reins by the end of this year, when most probably Sourav retires. It should be mandatory for the selectors to select the highest and second highest run getters and wicket takers in the Ranji matches, into the national side. Dhoni should be asked to get himself a haircut for a month in Ranchi and Kaartick can keep the stumps for while.

Their combined effort has stunned the millions of fans across the globe. Hoever, the chances of India qualifying into the next round is only academic. Bermuda must defeat Bangladesh by a good margin. I see no probability there. But my heart wants that to happen. What a shame, the fate of Indian cricket to be decided in a match between Bangladesh and Bermuda. Isssssssssssssh!

Indian Team for Cricket World Cup 2007

Quite some delay in my blog updates. Sorry.

I believe the next month will see a lot many blogs on Cricket with the Circket World Cup being fought out in the Carribean Islands.

The Indian Team was announced some time back, and I was really happy with the selections. The former Indian captain, Dilip Vengsarkar has carried on with his strong personality and assertiveness. Of course, the first instance of this quality came to the fore when he recalled the greatest Indian captain of all time and one of the most prolific cricketers in one day cricket - SOURAV GANGULY.

Sourav had fallen out of favor with the current coach Greg Chappell since the Zimbabwe tour more than a year back. And the then Chairman of the Selection Committee, Kiran More, after having come to a conflict much earlier on the Abhijit Kale episode, was more than happy and eager to keep Sourav out. Thankfully, More is gone and the onus to save Indian Cricket now lies with a batting legend in India - Vengsarkar.

The team he chose as the Chairman of the Selection Committee comprises

Batsmen: Rahul Dravid (captain), Sachin Tendulkar (vice-captain), Sourav Ganguly, Robin Uthappa, Yuvraj Singh.

All-rounders: Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan.

Wicketkeepers: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik.

Bowlers: Ajit Agarkar, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, Munaf Patel.

To be very honest, the inclusion of Sehwag and Pathan will face careful dissection. Both of them have been awfully out of form. Whereas Sehwag has been fishing in the corridor outside the off stump and making a clear mess of short pitched and rising deliveries, Pathan has been looking for the right line and length for a greater part of the season. Of course, he has become more useful as a batsman. But let us face it, we have better batters than Pathan. All we can hope for now, that this duo will break the shackles of poor form and rise to the occasion in the mega event - the World Cup.
